Naxos Island Vacations

The biggest of the Cyclades, Naxos is a verdant island with many scenic mountain villages, plenty of picturesque valleys, the highest mountain peak of the Cyclades, and the longest beaches, with soft golden sand and mirror-like aquamarine waters. Naxos is considered to still be unspoiled and very friendly to tourists.

Naxos is a must visit destination for those looking to enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Cyclades landscape and quaint villages. The beaches on this island are very special. It seems as if most of the coastal villages revolve around these beaches, thus creating a very laidback atmosphere, serving as an idyllic destination for travelers.

Chora Naxos, the largest town of Naxos, is likely to be the starting point of one's trip. Here, plenty of entertainment is to be found: excellent dining, enjoyable shopping, great nightlife The town is highly navigable by foot, as most everything is within walking distance. A must-see destination is Portara, a large marble gate built in 6th century BC and Naxos' most recognizable landmark. Be sure to watch a sunset from this point. Incredible. Apiranthos, perched on Mount Fanari is a village worth a visit. Very different from the rest of Naxos' cities, Apiranthos, know as the White City, is beautiful; With marble streets and even white gravel, it is a lovely place to see.

Near the town is the most popular beach, Agios Georgios, or St. George, embellished with tavernas, shops and bars nearby where refreshment and nourishment can be found for those looking to take a break from the Mediterranean sun's rays . This is a great first stop for a family, with a shore that recedes slowly into the relatively shallow crystal blue waters. As one travels south, the beaches tend to become much more remote. Agios Prokopios is a wonderful beach, with golden sand and nearby dining as well. A bit further south is Plaka, a beautiful, yet clothing optional beach that is far more remote than the previous two. For those a bit more adventurous, windsurfing is extremely popular on Naxos, due to the island's ideal location for the Meltemia, or summer winds. Be sure to explore the island on your own and find your very own secluded cove, away from it all.
