Rhodes Greece, the largest island of the Dodecanese Islands, is a mesmerizing collage of deep blue skies, crystal clear seas, and historic beauty. Rhodes' gorgeous coastline is an idyllic destination for beach lovers. Despite the island's international recognition as a cosmopolitan hot-spot, Rhodes still manages to provide secluded coves and bays for those seeking tranquility.
The historical destinations are vast and extensive. The capital's location, outside and within the walls of a Venetian Castle was consctructed by the Knights of St. John. The blending of past cultures with the modern day Rhodes architecture can be witnessed throughout the island. Rhodes, at one time was a sun-worshipping city, eventually evolving into a pivotal political, commercial, and religious mecca. During this period, the Colossus, a Greek statue of the god, Helios and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was constructed.
In terms of Rhodes' landscape, plenty of stunning beaches abound, as well as mountainous scenery - the best of which can be found between Faliraki and Lindos. Lindos, especially, is well known as a beautiful town that has even been deemed a protected historic settlement. Here the exquisite ancient creations, the Acropolis and the Temple of Athena can be viewed.
Another wonderful site on Rhodos can be found in Petaloudes, where the Valley of the Butterflies is located. Here, from July to September, thousands and thousands of butterflies visit here, thus creating a fantastic scene.
